Pet Dental Care

The Facts

Getting her teeth cleaning

At Intermountain Pet Hospital, we care about the health and comfort of our patients, and this includes dental care. Routine dental cleanings are a fundamental part of your pets' health care.

How do I know if my pet's teeth need to be cleaned?

During your pet's routine health exam, the veterinarian will also check your pet's teeth. They look for tartar on the gum line, which indicates a dental cleaning is needed. If left untreated, dental disease can occur, and their teeth can become infected. It is painful and can pose a possible health risk.

My pet's teeth need to be cleaned; now what?

Does my pet need a dental cleaning every yearAt IPH, we make every effort to provide excellent and affordable dental care for every pet.  Did you know that approximately 40% of dental disease is under the gum line and cannot be discovered unless dental radiographs are taken? We believe that full-mouth dental radiographs are so important in determining your pet's dental disease that we include complimentary radiographs with every cleaning!

Oral ATP – Assessment Treatment and Prevention

At Intermountain Pet Hospital we pride ourselves on our Dentistry Services. IPH has state-of-the-art dental equipment and intraoral radiographs for an accurate evaluation of your pet’s oral cavity. As your pet’s healthcare team, it is our responsibility to help identify, treat, and prevent dental disease in your loved one. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to help prevent dental disease by implementing your own Dental Home Care Plan, including routine Oral ATP’s. Just like in people, preventing and treating periodontal disease can significantly add to the quality and longevity of your pet’s life. The Oral Assessment, Treatment, and Prevention visit involve much more than just cleaning the plaque and tartar from a patient's teeth! Once your pet passes the pre-anesthetic examination and blood work (if needed) your pet will be anesthetized and the procedure will begin.

All Oral ATP’s Include:

ASSESSMENT:

  1. Intraoral Radiographs: Full-Mouth Radiographs are performed on every dental patient every time without exception. Since pets can’t talk, this is the only way to make an accurate diagnosis, treatment plan, and prognosis for each tooth. Forty percent of all dental disease lies below the gum line and would be missed without radiographs. We feel so strongly about the importance of this modality that we perform full-mouth radiographs at NO CHARGE on every patient.
  2. Oral Exam: Only when the patient has been anesthetized can we perform a complete oral examination and chart/record all findings.
TREATMENT:
  1. We perform full-mouth ultrasonic cleaning/scaling then polish each tooth individually.
  2. 4. If your pet's oral status requires further treatment (oral surgery/extractions, periodontal pocket therapy, enamel restoration, endodontics, etc.) we will call you for discussion and planning. You will be advised regarding treatment options and costs. We will not perform any treatments without your permission.

PREVENTION:

  1. Personalized Complimentary Dental Home Care Consult. With our help, we can help you choose what will work best for you and your pet. You can purchase a Dental Home Care Kit (you choose 3 different modalities to try for home care) for $7.
  2. Complimentary follow-up dental exam in 2 weeks. This is important if oral surgery was performed.
  3. Annual dental exam performed by your veterinarian. If/when there is tartar on the gum line with gingivitis your veterinarian will recommend an Oral ATP. Some pets require an Oral ATP every 6 months and some every 3-5 years. It varies by age, home care, chewing habits, breed, etc.
