As summer draws to a close, it’s time to start thinking about getting back to school and the routine of the fall and winter months. Your kids may already be complaining about the end of another fun and carefree summer and feeling a little unready to brave the classroom again—but have you thought about how your dog is feeling?

Maybe you’ve already noticed in years past or are seeing it now, but your dog could have some difficulty adjusting back to the school year schedule. During the summer, your pet probably had lots of attention and play time during family vacations, trips to the park to play, time on the river or at the lake, and on camping and hiking trips. As the season of activity winds down, your dog may start to feel a little depressed, bored, and lonely. You can make sure Fido doesn’t feel left out of the back-to-school busyness with these tricks.

Hey, Let’s Walk to School!

One of the simplest ways to ensure that your dog gets some exercise and family time while accommodating the school year hustle is to include your pet in school drop-off. If you live close enough to walk with your kids and your dog to school, the walk there and back will have health benefits for everyone involved, as well as offer an opportunity to catch up at the end of the day and spend time together.

If you drive your kids to school, consider bringing your pup along for the car ride. Many dogs enjoy a good trip in the car, and if your schedule allows it, they’ll have those extra few minutes of family time and feel less bored and left out.

Hire a Dog Walker

If you and your family are gone for most of the day during the school year, it can be worthwhile to hire a professional to walk your dog while you’re away. A dog walker can be an affordable way to combat boredom in your dog and keep him or her healthy and exercised.

Enroll Your Pet in Doggy Daycare

Sometimes, all your dog needs is a little extra play time with other doggy friends. Doggy daycare can be a fun and affordable way to combat the back-to-school blues, even if you choose to enroll your dog only a few days a week. If you notice your dog has picked up a few destructive habits such as chewing and destroying the house while you’re gone, he may be trying to tell you that he wants to go to doggy daycare.

Invest in Smart Toys

Smart dog toys such as puzzles and kibble-dispensing balls can keep your dog from getting bored. They’re great to leave with your pet if she does end up being home alone for extended periods of time, giving her something to “work on” while you’re away.
