Compassionate Veterinary Care for Your Older Pet

An elderly cat in Meridian ID.

According to the AAHA, only about 14% of senior pets actually get the regular health screenings recommended by their veterinarians. Around 40% of all senior dogs (7 years of age and older) have health issues undetectable to the naked eye. Since animals are so good at masking physical ailments, it’s common for even the most conscientious pet owner to not know there is a problem until the pet is very sick. This is why we recommend and encourage our pet owners to bring in their senior pets for regular wellness checkups. With early detection, many senior pet health issues are not only treatable in your older animal companion, but also may be preventable. The sooner these problems are caught, the faster we are able to begin treatment and the less your pet has to suffer. The other benefit of regular screenings is we will have a baseline for your pet’s health that allows us to track any changes over time and catch any problems as they occur. Our ultimate goal is to make your senior pet happy and healthy for his or her entire life.

Some of the conditions we look for in senior pets are:

  • Disease of the kidneys, heart, or liver
  • Tumors, either benign or cancerous
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Hormonal problems
  • Loss of vision or hearing

We believe so strongly in the importance of senior pet care that we now offer a wellness package tailored for our senior patients. In order to provide this extensive screening tool at an exceptional value, we are working with our reference laboratory on your pet’s behalf and are passing the savings on to you. This wellness package includes:

  • Comprehensive physical exam
  • Vaccinations that are due
  • Intestinal parasite exam
  • Heartworm test
  • Complete blood count
  • Complete blood chemistry
  • Full thyroid panel—When many vets run tests for thyroid, they only check the T4 levels. While testing only the T4 is less expensive, it can miss thyroid problems. With our full thyroid panel, you can be sure we will detect any and all thyroid issues.
  • Pancreatic test
  • Urinalysis—In the event the urine needs to be collected with ultrasound guidance, we also take the time to examine the bladder as well.
  • FELV and FIV infections (cats only)

The total cost of the senior wellness package is $198.50, which represents a 45% to 50% savings. Our wellness packages provide peace of mind for you, knowing your pet is getting the most complete care possible.
