Providing Quality Bird Care for Your Feathered Friends
We love our feathered friends as much as you do and encourage you to bring your bird in for an exam shortly after adoption. A major component of your bird’s initial exam includes getting a full clinical history from you, so any records you may have regarding the bird’s test history and exposure to other animals is helpful. Depending on the information we have, we may need to do lab work and testing of your bird’s blood to rule out the existence of any diseases.
The initial exam may consist of:
- Weighing your bird
- Checking for the presence of parasites in your bird’s stool sample, as well as checking the bacterial count
- Swabbing various parts of your bird’s digestive tract, including the choana or throat; crop, where he stores food; and cloaca, where he excretes his stool
- Testing for diseases and viruses that are transmittable to humans, such as psittacosis
After the first exam, annual wellness visits are recommended so we can track your bird’s health and keep him or her as healthy as possible. At Intermountain Pet Hospital, we are committed to providing the best avian care in the area. For additional information about the avian care services we offer, please contact us.
